This is a test to see if I can post a blog using my nifty iPhone. This way I can blog more. The messages may be shorter but more frequent. I’ve also taken alot of photos lately of caricatures I’ve drawn and places that we have been. Plenty more entries coming!
Guess Who’s Back

Well, its been a long time. I promise I won’t stay away this long again. Part of the delay is the fact that life has been so hectic since returning to the US from Panama. Yet, I had to post now because so much has happened. I have started the new POLKFUN line of gag cartoons. I’ve also been feeding my creativity in order to write and illustrate several children’s books. This is a process that I am learning to enjoy. It should yield some great work to blog about as well. Most recently I took on a new role as the business manager for my mentor, Jerry McJunkins. That’s what led to my meeting Tom Joyner of the “TJMS” heard locally on Charlotte’s v101.9. Mr. Joyner liked Jerry’s “Famous People of Clay” which we are working to market to schools and institutions as an educational tool. Go to YOUTUBE and enter Jerry McJunkins to see the creation of this piece that took over 2 years to produce. Much more to come, stay tuned!
Steady as it Grows

The other day we visited Panama City and we were amazed at all of the development. This so-called third world country has a bustling and modern capital with all the amenities of other world-class cities. It must have something going for it if Bill Gates and Donald Trump are building towers there. This picture was taken from the old city which is very beautiful although hundreds of years old. Yet it pales in comparison to the new modern city. Or does it? You’ve got to see it for yourself.
Playa Paraiso

The other day, I had the opportunity to take my first swim in the Pacific Ocean. We went to a beach called Santa Clara. Who knew that Panama had such nice beaches. They say that we haven’t seen the half, the Atlantic side beaches are said to be much better. We’ll see next week when we visit a place called Bocas Del Toro. For now, enjoy these pics. Oh by the way, this is a rural area about an hour and a half from Panama City where there is plenty of ocean front property left:)

Eat, Pray, Draw!

Today I watched a movie that I didn’t think I would go see. What I thought was another Julia Roberts tear jerker chick flick. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised in some regards by Eat, Pray, Love.
First of all, the locations of Italy and Bali were breathtaking. My wife always told me that Italy was a beautiful country. The cinematography really brought out the true beauty of the narrow streets, ruins, sculptures, and even the Tuscan countryside. They also made you hungry by displaying savory Italian dishes. When it comes to Bali, I now know what Al Hirschfeld saw in the way the sun flattened the horizon lines of the rice fields. It was so beautiful. The acting wasn’t half bad in the film as well. I however didn’t like the unnecessary language in the first half of the film, nor the portrayal of prayer as a repetitive act that requires reciting from a prayer book.
Lastly, I did like the fact that it showed people helping people and showing neighborly love. Anyways, its late now and I gotta go Eat, Pray, and Draw!
Visit with Bill Gallo of NY Daily News

A little over a year ago I had the pleasure of meeting the master of Sports Cartooning, Bill Gallo of the New York Daily News. My goal in meeting him was to have him critique my work. He did and to my surprise he said that he liked my approach.
To put this into context, Bill has been sketching sports cartoons and writing columns for over 50 years. Here I am a novice and he LIKED my approach. In order to make his appreciation for my work official, he actually wrote me a letter of recommendation. Now that I am back in the states with the time and opportunity to pursue this field, I sincerely hope that this letter will open doors.

Artistic Inspiration
Posted by Jerrard K. Polk | Filed under Cartoons
When a cartoonist is stumped and needs motivation, where does he or she go? To other cartoonists websites that are working it out in their field.
I reached one of those times where I needed such inspiration. Today I went to the Kchronicles.com, the website of Keith Knight. Keith is the syndicated cartoonist behind the The Knight Life and (Th)ink. His strip is very progressive in its subject matter on race, politics, and everyday life in America. Yet, I found that he offered priceless advice to budding cartoonists that are trying to make it. That is definitely what you need when the pursuit of a career as a cartoonist and illustrator is so slow to develop. Still, his advice to persevere is invaluable. He said to look at rejection as motivation. I intend to do that!
